HOUGHTON - The ICC and the College of Computing are happy to announce the exciting three days of activities planned for the 2023 Showcase AI Event on October 4-6, 2023. Presenting notable and renowned speakers, fascinating demos and tours, previews of research being conducted at Michigan Tech, special panels, and more, the ICC and College of Computing is designed to have visitors of all ages participate in this event. 

“The team at the ICC has been working to provide an amazing event for those interested in viewing the future of tech and industry boosted by massive integration of automated systems.” Says James Townsend, the Research Coordinator for the ICC. “The features the event will offer over the course of the three days will be as educational as they are entertaining, and the ICC is excited to present the work of our impactful researchers and that of the companies and speakers in attendance.”

Oct. 4-

The event kickoff at 5:30 P.M. will showcase AI-related projects and research from faculty and students at Michigan Tech, taking place in the Great Lakes Research Center. Simultaneously, the College of Computing Induction Ceremony and the ICC Achievement Awards will be taking place inside the GLRC Boathouse, during which a panel discussion on AI in Academia and Industry will take place. 

Oct. 5-

The second day of Showcase [AI] will lead with a virtual seminar presented by Dr. Bill Spotz, Program Manager for the US Department of Energy. This will be followed by the Women in IT and Tech Panel discussion -  Lunch will be served during this event, preluding a break until Dr. Jennifer Weller, NSF Program Officer and UNC Charlotte professor, will present on her work and involvement with NSF..

Oct. 6-

As part of Showcase [AI], Michigan Tech is excited to celebrate Manufacturing Day along with the rest of the nation! Starting with tours of Michigan Tech's state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and a demonstration of Waupaca Foundry's portable casting system, Manufacturing Day will host a keynote speech from Tom Kelly, the CEO of Automation Alley and an innovative leader in Industry 4.0. From there, Dr. Jeffrey Horn will discuss his research in collaboration with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The event will conclude with interactive displays from local manufacturers and Michigan Tech student organizations. 

 “With rapid developments in AI and automation, new advancements in technologies are changing the way that we see manufacturing. Manufacturing Day celebrates this recent progress and along with its future potential. From high school students participating in robotics competitions to data scientists in semiconductor facilities to biotechnicians in pharmaceuticals, there's more than enough room for everyone in manufacturing!”

The event is a great opportunity to see state-of-the-art tech and research, explore the excitement and controversy surrounding AI, and see how automation is already a significant part of our day-to-day life.

The Institute of Computing and Cybersystems is the research arm of the College of Computing at Michigan Tech, established with the goal to encourage interdisciplinary collaborations to work across organizational boundaries and create an environment set up to succeed in contemporary technological innovation. The ICC reinforces Michigan Tech’s goal to be a top public university and leader in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
