Birds and Berries: The Importance of Native Plants to Migrating Songbirds

Zoom Talk: "Health of Migrating Landbirds in the Face of a Changing Landscape: Importance of Native Plants"

Michigan State University ornithologist Jen Owen is set to deliver a compelling Zoom talk at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18. The talk, titled "Health of Migrating Landbirds in the Face of a Changing Landscape: Importance of Native Plants," is sponsored by Keweenaw Wild Ones.

The focus of Owen's talk will be on the concerning decline in migratory bird populations, which have plummeted by almost 30% over the last 50 years, largely due to habitat loss and degradation. A significant contributing factor to habitat degradation is the invasion of non-native plants. Owen will delve into the relative value of native and nonnative plants, with particular emphasis on their importance in the fall, when birds are preparing for their lengthy journey south by fattening up.

If you're interested in gaining deeper insights into the state of migratory bird populations and the crucial role of native plants in preserving their health, be sure to register for this enlightening talk.
