The Great Bear Chase

Put your best skis on and head up to Calumet this Saturday, March 11 for the Great Bear Chase at 8 a.m.

One of the last ski races of the season is back for another exciting year. The Great Bear Chase is a thrilling experience for participants and spectators alike. You can catch the fun at the race start, on Spruce Street in Calumet, near the intersection with Osceola Road.

The annual ski race has been held for over 40 years. It’s a significant event for the Keweenaw and brings together skiers of all experience levels and ages from the area and beyond. Skiers will flow through the Swedetown Trails in Calumet, seeing the natural beauty past the Swedetown Chalet Trailhead.

“The seven events are open to skiers of all abilities,” said Race Director Angela Luskin. “Distances range from 50 km to 10 km. We also have the unique 50k Skiathlon, which involves both classic and freestyle techniques. About 80% of our participants come from outside our immediate area, which means more than 600 skiers and their families are renting hotel rooms, eating at restaurants and supporting our local economy.”

This Great Bear Chase is always one of the last major ski races of the season. That means it’s a must-attend event for skiers looking to finish their year strong. The race offers a few course options, from 10k to 50k for more experienced skiers.

Event organizers say the race features a unique culture and small-town feel. Organizers add the race is authentic because it’s built for racers by racers.
