Locavore Festival

  • Houghton Pier 57 Huron St Houghton, MI, 49931 United States (map)

The Houghton farmers market season kicks off on Saturday, May 25 from noon to 3 p.m. with live music, farm animals, and all things local. Locavore Festival welcomes bands Fast Car and Dead North who will play 90s pop and bluegrass, setting the mood for summer on the Portage Canal. Expect goats and lambs to pet for kids, local farm and craft vendors, and groovy music on the pier. Come hungry because the Dog Father and the Matador food trucks will sling up delicious, locally-made food on the waterfront.

The Pier: Last year’s opening market saw warm temperatures and sunshine on the pier! Make sure to pack sunscreen and sunglasses. The Houghton waterfront pier was completed in October 2022, making this its second full summer of use. The $5M investment is large enough to accommodate cruise ships, community events, and marketplaces.

Waterfront Trail & New Pedestrian Corridor: With the removal of an aging parking structure, Houghton’s revamped waterfront and pedestrian corridor is brighter and more walkable. Folks can find ample parking along Lakeshore Drive and can walk between Shelden Avenue with ease on the new low-grade walking ramp. It’s accessible for wheelchair users and is a great place to take a break and admire the canal.

Locavore Festival: “Last year we started this tradition as a celebration of Spring and to showcase our pier along the waterfront,” said Amy Zawada, Houghton Community and Business Development Director. “This year the name changed to the Locavore Festival. A Locavore is someone who celebrates locally grown food, art, and music. The Houghton Farmers Market will start here on June 11.”

Locavore Festival celebrates all things Keweenaw, from our northern-grown produce to our passionate food vendors and recreation outfitters. Come down to the pier May 25 from noon to 3 p.m. to jump-start your summer, enjoy fresh air, and shop all the products and produce you’ve been missing this winter.
