Ribbon Cutting Ceremony scheduled for February 29 at Child Advocacy Center

The Houghton Keweenaw Child Advocacy Center (CAC), in collaboration with the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce, is thrilled to announce a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate their journey of safeguarding children in the community. The ceremony is scheduled for February 29, 2024, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the ribbon-cutting set to take place at 12 p.m., at the Houghton Keweenaw CAC.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony serves as an opportunity for community members to learn more about the Houghton Keweenaw CAC, honor the achievements of the multidisciplinary team, as well as officially welcome the Houghton Keweenaw CAC to the community.

Originally opening its doors in late 2020 amidst the challenges of the pandemic, the Houghton Keweenaw CAC has been a steadfast pillar of support for the region's youth since its inception. In January of 2024, the center achieved national accreditation from the National Children's Alliance (NCA), a testament to its unwavering commitment to excellence in child advocacy.

The accreditation process has taken more than two and a half years to complete. The Houghton Keweenaw CAC is the first CAC to be accredited in the state of Michigan in five years. Moreover, the Houghton Keweenaw CAC is the first in the U.P. to receive such an honor.

The team has tirelessly worked towards creating a safe and supportive interview environment for children who have experienced sexual or physical abuse. Since the center’s first full year of service in 2021, they have successfully conducted 150 interviews, roughly one interview every week.

The event promises to be a poignant moment for all involved, showcasing the resilience and strength of the community in the face of adversity. Local leaders, community members and advocates are invited to join in celebrating these milestones in child advocacy. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. There is no cost to attend or RSVP required.
