HOUGHTON — Pine Mountain Music Festival comes to the Keweenaw this week, bringing a handful of musical performances and an opera. You can watch the Bergonzi Trio, On the Town Concerts and an opera produced by the Guerilla Opera ensemble at the Rozsa.
The Bergonzi Trio Presents Formal Concerts and Children’s Concerts
Tuesday, June 13, 1-2 p.m. & 7:30-9:30 p.m.
The Bergonzi Trio, made up of Scott Flavin (violin), Lindsay Garritson (piano) and Ross Harbaugh (cello), will bring an exciting program including pieces by Tailleferre, Haydn and the Ravel Piano Trio. You can watch an evening concert by the trio at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday. Kids may enjoy a children’s concert at the Portage Lake United Church from 1-2 p.m. by the Trio.
On the Town Concerts
Wednesday, June 14, 4-4:30 p.m. & 6-6:45p.m.
These free, 45-minute concerts will feature performances by Pine Mountain Music Festival musicians from different ensembles mixed. They will play music by Schubert and Boccherini. The first show is in Calumet at The Vertin from 4-4:30 p.m. Later in the evening, the same group will perform outside the Portage Lake District Library on the Houghton Pier from 6-6:45 p.m.

Guerilla Opera Presents the Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage: A Concert Version of Elena Ruehr’s Opera Based on the Steampunk Graphic Novel by Sydney Padua

“The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage” is a comic opera based on Sydney Padua’s graphic novel, featuring the unrealized inventor Charles Babbage and proto-programmer Ada Lovelace. The opera incorporates sounds from the world’s only working difference engine, recorded in Seattle, and showcases the unique percussion section created from its clicks and clacks. Guerilla Opera artists perform without a conductor, highlighting their exceptional communication skills honed through consistent practice. Don’t miss this extraordinary opera!
Lindsay Garritson Presents Solo Performance, Reimagined
Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11, 7:30-9:30 p.m.
Lindsay Garritson, part of the Bergonzi Trio, will perform a piano concert solo at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. She’ll feature works by Astora Piazzolla and Marc-Andrew Hamelin. During her Pine Mountain Music Festival residency, Garritson is teaching several masterclasses for students.
Isle Royale Celebrates Its 80th Anniversary Through Music
Friday, June 9 and Sunday, June 11
Pine Mountain Music Festival joins forces with Isle Royale National Park to premiere quartets on Isle Royale, performed by the Superior String Alliance Chamber Players. You can watch live music on Isle Royale on June 9 from 7-8 p.m. at the Rock Harbor Auditorium.
If you can’t make it to Isle Royale, watch Sunday, June 11 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Orpheum Theatre in Hancock.
Pine Mountain Music Festival Steampunk Gala
Wednesday, June 14, 8-10 p.m.
Come to a steampunk themed performance at the Quincy Mine Hoist House for music, food and great conversation. Steampunk is a design style inspired by Victorian era industrialism. Think of steam powered machinery. There is a suggested $10 donation at the door.
Upstarts! Concerts
Wednesday, June 21, 7:30-9:30 p.m.
Come to the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts Lobby on Wednesday, June 21 to find young, emerging singers and instrumentalists from the Upper Peninsula. They’ll be meeting audiences of all sizes and performing with their impressive talents. This year’s performers include Oskar Gaenssle (bassoon), Maitri White (soprano), Michael Halvorson (saxophone) and Adam Hall (cello).
