HOUGHTON–Have you ever wanted to grow roses but worried they might not survive our winters? Learn how to grow this queen of flowers at 6:30 p.m., Monday, May 15, at the Carnegie Museum. Melissa Boerman, president of the Keweenaw Rose Growers, will present “Growing Roses in the Keweenaw? Yes!” This free talk is sponsored by the Keweenaw Garden Club, and anyone attending can sign up to win a free rose plant.
Some may think that growing roses in the Copper Country is almost impossible, but by following a few simple guidelines, anyone can be a rose gardener, Boerman said. She will provide an overview of what conditions roses prefer and advice on which types of roses will thrive in Keweenaw gardens. She will also discuss pest control, winterizing techniques and the many ways roses can be used to beautify gardens, from hedges to hanging baskets.
Boerman was raised in the Copper Country and returned to the area in 2021. She is a consulting rosarian with the American Rose Society and has 30 years’ experience growing roses.
