Houghton From the Ground Festival to mark start of spring and home-grown goods

Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 27, so you make it to Houghton From the Ground Festival. Get in touch with your Yooper grown and crafted roots as you listen to musical artists, browse vendor booths and enjoy Western U.P. cuisine. From noon to 6 p.m. on the fresh Houghton Pier you’ll find yourself surrounded by happy faces, warmer weather and lively music.

The pier will fill with artisans and farmer vendors with fresh produce for the first Houghton market of the season. We Bike E Bike of Baraga will be on site with equipment demos. You can ride along the Portage Canal and enjoy Downtown Houghton.

From the Ground Festival is happening in conjunction with Ride the Keweenaw. On Saturday at 9 a.m. there is a group bike ride at the Michigan Tech Trails and a Family Enduro at 10 a.m. Afterward, Downwind Sports will offer bike check-ups down at the pier from 12-5 p.m. You can register for Ride the Keweenaw online.

Houghton From the Ground Festival is an event by From the Ground Farmer’s Market Collective, the group that puts on the Calumet, Hancock and Houghton Farmer’s Markets.

“Houghton From the Ground Fest started off as a celebration of spring and to showcase our new pier along the Houghton waterfront,” said Rachael Pressley, From the Ground Festival planner and co-founder/secretary of From the Ground Farmer’s Market Collective. “Our Houghton Farmer’s Market will move there on Tuesdays starting June 13 and we are so excited to share this new optimal location in collaboration with our event partners (City of Houghton, Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce, Visit Keweenaw, Copper Harbor Trails Club and MTU – Rozsa Center). Since From the Ground serves farmers, producers and artisans, we also saw this as an opportunity to celebrate all things local. Local food, local art, local rides and local music all coming together for a truly local experience.”

The event will also break in the newly finished Houghton Pier. Its construction wrapped up in late 2022, so the event will be one of the first to be held on the pier once the snow melts.

Music Lineup:

12-1:15 p.m. – Adam Meckler and Jana Nyberg

1:35-2:50 p.m. – Kevin Blackstone

3:10-4:25 p.m. – Hannah Rundman, Bruce Rundman & Bling Crosby

4:45-6:00 p.m. – Ani & Kora

Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate spring, support local farmers and artisans and enjoy a day of music and festivities at Houghton From the Ground Festival on Saturday, May 27 from noon to 6 p.m.
