HOUGHTON — For some Michigan Tech students, this may be their first, last or only Winter Carnival they get to experience. They aren’t letting the lack of snow stop that!

Month-long statues are still taking shape – and groups are registered to make the smaller, faster all-nighter statues the night of Wednesday, Feb. 7. This year’s theme is “From Forests to Shores We Love the Outdoors” so expect to see Yooper-centric designs like bears, waves and pine trees in the statues. Winter Carnival will supplement snow from other parts of town if there’s not enough in yards.

Another fun activity this year: look for dog sled and horse-drawn carriage rides throughout Campus.

“Winter Carnival is one way for the MTU and Keweenaw Communities to show how we can have an amazing time in our brutal winters but even in years where it may not be as harsh, everyone can still enjoy what Michigan Tech Students embody: tenacity,” said Joe Dlugos, Blue Key Honor Society President. “The special events, Stage Revue, and all other activities that organizations put on are just some of the ways that everyone can appreciate what our community has to offer.”

Winter Carnival Stage Revue is a performance from Michigan Tech Groups that will make you laugh! The students put on short skits with a focus on comedy and you can watch them on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for the public and free to MTU students. Stage Revue may not be appropriate for younger audiences – expect college-level humor. Shows will play on this year’s nature theme.

Register for Bigfoot Glowshoe 2024! MTU snowshoe rentals are sold out for the evening on Thursday, Feb. 8 so if you want to participate you’ll have to bring your own! There will be masses of people from the community and campus lighting up the Tech Trails on snowshoe. Check in for your glow apparel when you arrive, and make sure you register to get your glow on. It runs from 6-9 p.m. by the Michigan Tech Trails at the main trailhead.

Watch two hockey games next week during Winter Carnival and show your Husky pride! Michigan Tech takes on Minnesota State on Friday, Feb. 9 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. Come support the Huskies and cheer them on to victory. Catch a second match on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 5:07 p.m.

The famous Torchlight Parade and Fireworks will conclude MTU Winter Carnival at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10. Find a cozy spot along the Portage Canal in Houghton, like the downtown pier or MTU campus for a Torchlight Parade at Mont Ripley. Watch from across the canal to see this glowing spectacle make its way down the hill. See the magnificent fireworks show, celebrating another fun year of Winter Carnival and all its Husky traditions.
