A Shared Journey Out of Silence in 'From There to Hear’

Two long-time friends, Margaret Gerhard from Fence, Wisconsin, and Carol Rose of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, share a unique bond. Both their lives were profoundly impacted by the use of bilateral cochlear implants. The story of their journey was recently brought to light in Carol Rose's book, "From There to Hear, A Journey Out of Silence."

The friends first met at a retreat over two decades ago, quickly discovering their commonalities. Little did they know then that both Carol and Margaret's husband, Steve, would later receive bilateral cochlear implants to aid their hearing loss.

In her book, 81-year-old Carol Rose chronicles her experience with hearing loss and the subsequent transformation following the cochlear implants. A chapter named "Team Andy," penned by Margaret, elucidates their experience of welcoming Andy, a black lab Hearing Assist Dog, into their family.

The book also incorporates a resource section from "Cochlear Implant Basics" by Richard Pocker, another recipient of bilateral cochlear implants. Pocker is recognized for his advocacy work for the hard of hearing and the deaf communities.

"I want it to be readily available and easily read," Carol said about her book, which is concisely written with a total of 104 pages. She believes it will provide a helpful starting point for anyone considering cochlear implants, as well as support those who have them, along with their families and friends.

"From There to Hear" is priced at $15 plus tax and shipping, and can be purchased directly from Carol Rose, select stores, and online platforms including Bookshop.org, BarnesandNoble.com, and Amazon.com.
