Portage Lake Lift Bridge lower deck opens for snowmobile traffic

HOUGHTON-HANCOCK — The Portage Lake Lift Bridge saw its first snowmobilers of the season this week. It’s a mass municipal, MDOT and club effort – a snow path is laid across the bridge’s lower deck to allow snowmobile traffic. The trails stretch as far as Wisconsin, cross the Portage Lake Lift Bridge and go to towns like Copper Harbor, Gay and Lac La Belle. This pivotal moment in winter is something people look forward to each year.

The Keweenaw Snowmobile Club grooms its 230-miles of snowmobile trails all season long. About three feet of snow fell in the last week. The trails are dotted with great food and lodging along the way. Be sure to pick up a trail permit and follow along on Facebook for the latest updates from the club. Go to www.visitkeweenaw.com for trail conditions, maps and more information.
