Volunteers needed for Third Annual KORC Coastal Clean-Up & Community Cookout

COPPER HARBOR — The Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition (KORC) is excited to announce our third annual KORC Adopt-a-Beach Clean-Up. This volunteer event will take place in Copper Harbor on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.. A community cookout in the park will follow and will include a raffle with prizes donated by area clubs and businesses. Outdoor refreshments and food for volunteers have been graciously provided by The Mariner North.

KORC is hosting the event as part of the Alliance for the Great Lakes Adopt-a-Beach annual initiative. We will be focusing on all coastlines along the Keweenaw. Several organizations and partners will be setting out from—or converging to—Copper Harbor, including the Stewards of Bete Grise Preserve, Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club, Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District, Keweenaw ATV Club, Copper Harbor Trails Club, Keweenaw Overland Adventure Retreat, and more.

Keweenaw Adopt-a-Beach Clean-Up event details:

  • Please meet KORC organizers at the Donny Kilpela Memorial Park in Copper Harbor between 9–10 a.m. for directions on where to clean, maps, trash bags, and gloves

  • If your group has a location selected already, please email korc.info@gmail.com.

  • If possible, please bring trash bags to Copper Harbor for the total weighing.

  • KORC will dispose of all trash collected.

  • Please bring a water bottle or canteen to stay hydrated. Water is available at the park.

  • A separate focus area at Bete Grise North Beach will help improve the edges of Bete Grise Road that was recently reconstructed by the Keweenaw County Road Commission. Volunteers are needed to help smooth the terrain of the road edges and gather old road materials that will be re-used in an upcoming Bete Grise North Beach Kayak Launch project. Volunteers for this focus area can meet at Register at the Bete Grise North Beach starting at 8:45 a.m.

The Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition (KORC) was formed in 2019 and brings together a wide variety of user groups with one shared goal: to protect the Keweenaw's vast landscapes for everyone, forever. Whether our members bike, snowmobile, hunt, fish, hike, paddle, pick berries, birdwatch, or so much more, we work collectively to help to make this vision a reality. In the past year, KORC volunteer efforts and financial support have helped with improvements at Gratiot River County Park, adding and improving amenities at High Rock, repairing the Mandan and West Schlatter Lake Roads, Sheriff’s Search and Rescue efforts and more. Membership and more information are available at www.keweenawoutdoorrecreation.org
