Keweenaw Community Foundation announces opening of several grants on Sept. 1

HANCOCK - Keweenaw Area Community Foundation provides grants to 501(c)(3) organizations, churches, schools, and governmental units serving our local communities. The online application will be available Sept. 1 through Oct. 20, 2023. Grant awards will be announced in November. The following funds will be accepting grant applications:

David Wiitanen & Slim McLean Memorial Youth Hockey Fund: supports youth hockey programs. ($2,600 available)

Environmental Fund: supports programs, projects, and activities related to a broad range of environmental topics including public health, community development, environmental stewardship education, public policy, planning, water, wildlife, and outdoor recreation. ($2,000 available)

Joe Freed Empowerment Fund: supports efforts to empower individuals with mental and/or intellectual or developmental disabilities in the Copper Country region to be a valued, thriving part of our community. ($10,000 available)

Houghton County Historical Preservation Fund: supports local historical preservation and education projects or activities related to Houghton County, Michigan. ($1,200 available)

Keweenaw Cross Country Skiing Fund: supports skiing programs throughout Houghton and Keweenaw Counties. ($2,200 available)

Copper Shores Community Health Foundation - Community Wellness and Outdoor Recreation Fund: supports programs and projects that influence or support individual physical activity and healthy nutrition; supports the expansion, creation, or sustainment of outdoor recreational resources in Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties. ($29,500 available)

Youth Funds: In addition, over $20,000 in total is available to support youth programs and activities in our local communities from the Kellogg Youth Endowment Fund, Portage Lake Youth Fund, and Funding Youth Initiatives.
