CALUMET — Visit Keweenaw is accepting applications for its 2024 Destination Development Awards. Applicants have until April 1 to submit their proposals and may request up to $20,000. Destination Development is the intentional process of making investments in community infrastructure to improve a destination’s ability to attract visitors and enhance their experiences. Past examples include installing interpretive signage to share local history and constructing pavilions at parks that are used yearly for events. Applications may vary in scope but will often focus on principles of placemaking that leverage the unique characteristics of a community and build upon its assets to benefit visitors and residents alike.

The Keweenaw is a special place to enjoy. By investing in destination development, Visit Keweenaw supports local projects that enhance visitor experiences to encourage them to return. These investments help connect the visitor economy with local community development generating positive benefits across the Keweenaw.

“Since the program started in 2022, we’ve been able to provide more than $100,000 in Destination Development awards to nonprofits and local government orgs in Houghton and Keweenaw County,” said Brad Barnett, Visit Keweenaw executive director. “These investments have supported amazing community projects like beginner-friendly trails, downtown murals, signage and even emergency service rescue equipment. It’s been a great opportunity to partner with community organizations while enhancing the visitor experience.”

Local units of government and nonprofit organizations operating in Houghton or Keweenaw County can apply. Businesses are ineligible but may support an application process with ideas, expertise and resources. Projects are encouraged to be completed by September 2024. Applications are evaluated by Visit Keweenaw staff and a subcommittee of Visit Keweenaw’s board of directors.
